PLANG THANGS
THANG #417
Glass, wood, copper, moss, salt, vinegar, 2021
24" x 8" x 11"
Exploring the conjunction of trees, epiphytes, glass, metal, and artificial growth, this sculpture invites an interaction with things often overlooked. Moss, lichen, and fungus are all represented in glass, made to fit a log found in a forest in northwestern Virginia. The protruding blown glass forms are constrained by hand woven copper wire cages. In a closed environment the copper on this sculpture interacted with the salt and vinegar solution in the bowl, growing a brilliant blue patina over time. Check out the pictures to see where it started and what it looked like after 6 months of growth!
